Assuming that your web site has already been optimised you will now want to get it listed on all the top search engines. There are various ways of going about this but the safest way is to do it manually.

You will no doubt have seen companies or software applications that offer to submit your web site in 5 minutes to a multitude of search engines. We advise you to avoid these services. The reason for our advice is that multiple-submit services can breach the terms of service of the search engines where you are trying to get listed. Google expressly forbids the use of this type of service. You don't want to upset Google, or any other search engine for that matter.

The reason behind this policy is down to the fact that they really want you to physically visit their engines, to view their ads, use their services, and complete their forms in the way that they prefer. Software involves no visit to the site (other than by the software itself) and often the forms are not completed correctly.

Have you seen those strangely-shaped characters that you have to enter on some forms before they will send? These characters are hard for software to read and thus, the software is physically disabled from working. Therefore, using such software service not only upsets the search engines but it simply does not work properly.

There are many search engines out there and, with a bit of searching, you will be able to find a suitable list of ones to submit to. We have a list of our own which takes us approx 4 hours to work through. We visit each engine in turn, check where our clients are ranked, and we (re)submit the site if it is not found. Sites can disappear without warning so this regular monitoring is important.
